Maintenance Tip: Wax The Lights

Wax
Okay, we admit it's a little detail, but in winter’s gloom and short days, every last lumen you can squeeze out of your headlamps is going to improve your safety.

Here's an easy two-minute drill: Make sure the headlamps are clean of dirt, rub car wax (any type will do) on the lamps, let it dry and buff it off. Repeat. For bonus points, do the taillights.

The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an "icicle" coat when road slush refreezes on your car -- and will make it easier to remove it if it does.

GMC Terrain Sales Best Ever for Month of November

Gmc
DETROIT – The GMC Terrain’s November sales were the best ever, with retail sales up 28 percent and total sales up 44 percent. The small SUV is also on track for its best year ever in retail and total sales.

GMC ended November with year-over-year retail sales down 3 percent for the month. Total sales in November were up 1 percent.

“Terrain has had a big impact on GMC showrooms since it launched two years ago,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of GMC Sales and Service. “It brings in more customers new to GMC than any other model and sales continue to grow as more crossover buyers look for the brand’s signature capability and design but don’t need three rows of seating.”

Terrain Denali, an upscale model added earlier this year, is contributing to sales in major metropolitan areas. It represented 14 percent of sales in New York – Terrain’s top market in November – and 18 percent of sales in Los Angeles, which was one of the small SUV’s top five markets.

This month, both Terrain and Acadia were named “Best Buys” for 2013 by Consumer’s Digest. Terrain’s award was given for the magazine’s “Compact SUV” segment and Acadia’s for the “Midsize SUV” segment.

The 2013 Acadia and Acadia Denali crossover SUVs are now arriving at dealerships with new styling inside and out along with new advanced connectivity and safety features.

Magic Magnets Give Buick Crossovers AWD Refinement

Buick
DETROIT – When snow inevitably starts falling over the General Motors Proving Ground in Michigan this winter, Buick engineers will use the conditions to put the finishing touches on the Encore luxury small crossover. It arrives early next year as the brand’s first entry into the burgeoning small crossover segment.

Encore’s “Active On-Demand” all-wheel drive is designed to give the vehicle the fluid drive characteristics and sure-footed traction Buick drivers expect but in a smaller, lighter package. Unlike traditional systems that engage all four drive wheels after slip is detected, Encore uses a magnetic charge to engage a clutch at the rear axle preemptively when the vehicle is at rest because slippage is most likely to occur just as the vehicle begins to move. If no slip is detected, a computer control automatically disengages the preemptive torque to the clutch once the Encore is underway, returning the system to a primarily front-drive operation.

“A Buick all-wheel drive system has to deliver the best traction possible, and it has to do it in a way that’s totally imperceptible to the driver,” said Encore Chief Engineer Jim Danahy. “We engineered Encore’s lightweight, responsive and refined system to deliver on the expectations of demanding luxury buyers.”

Buick engineers used their experience developing an all-wheel drive system for the Enclave luxury crossover SUV and applied it to Encore’s smaller packaging. The Enclave uses similar technology. To fit Encore’s weight and space needs, engineers worked with BorgWarner to develop a new, more compact coupling for the rear axle.

Reduced weight benefits Encore’s handling, as well as fuel economy. With all-wheel drive, Encore’s EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Beyond weight savings, the advantages of Active On-Demand all-wheel drive for the driver include rapid activation and deactivation, more control over the transfer of torque, more refined performance in tight turns and parking situations and better integration with safety systems like ABS and stability control.

“Technology is allowing us to translate Buick’s quiet, comfortable ride to smaller vehicles than we could before,” said Danahy. “This all-wheel drive system, like turbocharged engines and Buick QuietTuning technologies, allows drivers to experience that Buick DNA with unprecedented efficiency and maneuverability.”

According to the 2012 Harris Poll AutoTECHCASTSM Study, “familiarity with all-wheel drive continues to climb” and one third of all new car buyers would consider purchasing the technology on their next new vehicle. Consideration of all-wheel drive is greatest among luxury crossover/SUV owners, along with owners between 35-54 years of age. Among current all-wheel drive vehicle owners, 83 percent consider it an important feature for their vehicle.

In addition to the upcoming Encore and the redesigned 2013 Enclave, Buick offers all-wheel drive for the 2013 LaCrosse V-6 luxury sedan.

2013 Verano Continues Buick Five-Star Safety Streak

Buick
DETROIT – The Buick Verano compact luxury sedan recently received a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Earlier this year, Verano was named a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Since the beginning of the 2012 model year, every Buick passenger car tested has received these highest possible ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS.

“New car customers leaving a Buick dealership can drive away knowing they are in a vehicle with superior crash protection,” said Gay Kent, GM General Director of Vehicle Safety. “The brand’s long-running record of five-star overall vehicle scores and Top Safety Picks is a testament to our commitment to exceptional vehicle crash performance.”

In achieving the 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score, the Verano was tested under NHTSA’s revised New Car Assessment Program.  The overall score is based on frontal and side crash tests in addition to evaluation for rollover resistance. Under the rating system, performances in three test segments are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score.”

The Verano has 10 standard air bags and the security of OnStar, a combination unmatched by any competitor. In the event of a rollover crash, sensors in the vehicle deploy standard head curtain air bags prior to impact and leave them inflated for a longer period to provide additional protection.

Verano’s advanced body structure is comprised of more than 60 percent high-strength steel that provides a protective safety cage around occupants. Other safety measures include standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, panic brake override, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and a collapsible pedal system that reduces the risk of leg injury.

Every 2013 Verano comes with a standard Rear Vision Camera that displays a view from the car’s rear bumper whenever the transmission is in reverse. Verano is available with Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These two technologies share a set of radar sensors hidden in the corners of the rear bumper that may help drivers avoid crashes when changing lanes or backing.

GMC Pickups 101: Alphabet Soup of Acronyms

Gmc
DETROIT – Nearly every full-size pickup owner has a unique use for his or her truck. And considering the GMC Sierra’s 19 different cab and box combinations, the veritable alphabet soup of models practically has its own language of acronyms.

Some of the most important truck acronyms for owners to know are gross weight ratings. Exceeding any of a truck’s weight ratings is unsafe, and it’s a driver’s responsibility to know and avoid exceeding them.

“Nearly every vehicle performance attribute is designed and tested to one or more gross weight rating,” said Robert Krouse, General Motors trailering engineer. ”Body and chassis structural durability, powertrain and driveline durability, handling, braking, thermal and propulsion performance are all validated to specific ratings. That’s why it’s so important for owners to understand those limits.”

  • GAWR, or Gross Axle Weight Rating, is the maximum amount of weight that can be placed on either a truck’s front or rear axle, including the weight of the truck, driver, passengers, equipment and cargo. A higher front GAWR generally means more capacity for accessories like plows, while a high rear GAWR relates to a higher payload.
  • GVWR, or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, is the maximum amount of weight for the entire truck and everything in it. This number isn’t simply each axle rating added together; for that to work, the owner would have to precisely load so that each axle weight rating is met just as the overall vehicle rating is met, which isn’t possible in real world conditions. As a result, GVWR is always lower than the sum of each axle to account for changes in weight distribution.
  • GCWR, or Gross Combined Weight Rating, is the maximum weight of a truck and an attached trailer, plus everything in each of them. Some of a trailer’s weight is supported by the truck – this is known as tongue weight – a GCWR isn’t simply the GVWR plus the trailer’s weight. When attaching a trailer, an owner should factor tongue weight into a truck’s payload capacity.

“It’s very important that drivers observe these limits to maintain safe stopping distances,” said Krouse. “Not only that, overloading a truck causes excessive wear on suspension and brakes and could lead to engine or transmission failure.”

The 2013 Sierra’s highest GCWR is 30,500 pounds for a 3500HD Duramax DRW model. DRW, another truck acronym, applies only to 3500HD one-ton pickups. It implies a “dual rear wheel” option, as opposed to a “single rear wheel,” or SRW.

The option adds not only higher payload and weight limits, but also better stability with a large trailer attached. For a 2013 Sierra 3500HD 4x4 Crew Cab, a DRW option adds 5,700 pounds of available trailer weight rating and 1,011 pounds of payload capacity.

2013 Acadia Comes Armed for an Army of Elbows

DETROIT – The designers of the 2013 GMC Acadia crossover SUV had a lot of things to account for in developing a comfy interior – including as many as 16 pointy, sensitive elbow bones that would be part of a fully loaded eight-passenger vehicle.

General Motors global human factors engineer Joan Hertely and her team spent hundreds of hours creating resting places that considered angles, dimensions and the right materials to achieve maximum comfort.

“The process begins with benchmarking,” said Hertely, who has 12 years of armrest engineering experience. “We look at what works, what doesn’t, and start compiling criteria for width, length, angle, height, adjustment options, comfort, reach and overall design. And those factors consider door handles, cupholders and switch locations.”

Not all armrests can be treated equally, so a crossover that seats up to eight takes months of planning. The driver’s armrest needs to accommodate more controls. The front center armrest needs to both slide and open for storage, and must be level with armrests on the front doors. The four rear outboard armrests are designed with cupholders, which need to be positioned to avoid spills. Optional second-row captain’s chairs have armrests that move with the seatbacks and can be adjusted up and down, requiring additional design criteria.

“Once a layout is in place after having been evaluated and optimized over a hundred hours in a stationary buck, further testing continues out on the road,” said Hertely. “We took countless drives with Acadias, paying close attention to how each armrest feels on both elbows and forearms, because people rest their arms differently. And the cupholder integration was new, so we had to ensure a level of comfort with the holders in use.”

More new car shoppers are discovering Acadia’s purposeful engineering. October sales for Acadia were the best for that month since 2007, the model’s first year on the market. And through the first 10 months of 2012, Acadia is on track for its best sales year ever.

“I never thought I would drive anything but a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz,” said Illona Olayan, an Acadia owner from Jacksonville, Florida. “But I drove an Acadia and was amazed by the great quality and craftsmanship. I’d recommend one to any family. It’s fun, functional and good looking.”

According to auto shopping site Edmunds.com, Acadia “offers a winning combination of comfort, features, cargo space and performance in a utility-style package.” The 2012 Acadia won Edmunds’ “Best Retained Value” award for SUVs between $35,000 and $45,000, as well as a 2012 ALG Residual Value Award in the full-size utility segment.

Buicks Are ‘In’ This Season in Trend-Setting Miami

DETROIT – Buick’s October retail sales were the highest since 2006, putting the brand on track for its best retail sales year since that year. Year-over-year sales to individual customers increased for the sixth straight month, up 15 percent. Total Buick sales, including those sold to executive fleets and other commercial customers, also grew by 15 percent.

Miami – a city dominated by luxury and import vehicles – is among the places where Buick is growing rapidly. More than twice as many metropolitan Miami car shoppers chose Buick in October compared to 2011, with retail sales up 117 percent.

“Miami is a unique and challenging market,” said Greg Ross, Buick regional zone manager for Florida. “Luxury brands often outsell more affordable brands and the mainstream segments are import-oriented, too. Buick’s growth in this image-conscious market is all about great products, advertising and dealers.”

Mark Naszradi, general manager for Williamson Buick-GMC in Miami, credits Experience Buick for attracting new customers to his showroom. “The new approach to leasing has really helped us,” Naszradi said. “Miami is a big leasing area.”

Experience Buick is a 24-month lease that includes SiriusXM satellite radio, OnStar Directions and Connections and oil changes in the monthly payments. Since launching in mid-March, lease penetration has grown from 47 percent of Buick sales in Miami to 65 percent in October.

Nationally, leasing has more than doubled since the introduction of Experience Buick.

The new 2013 Enclave luxury crossover is now arriving at dealers with many new standard features, including the industry’s first front center air bag and an IntelliLink voice command system. Enclave retail sales were up 1 percent year-over-year in October.

Monday Maintenance Tip: 9 Ways to Ruin Your Paint Without Knowing It

Keeping your car looking good isn’t just a matter of enhancing its resale value, although that’s important too, it’s also your car’s only line of defense between the sheet metal and the elements. You already know parking lot dings, gravel roads or an angry ex can ruin your car’s paint in the blink of an eye, but a lot of things out there can do just as much, if not more, harm to the exterior of your car.

We contacted Mothers for advice on how to deal with common paint-damaging situations. While their specific advice is below, time and time again, they recommended keeping a good coat of wax on your car. Not only does it keep it looking pretty, it helps prevent most paint damage, or at the very least, buys you some time to get your car professionally washed. Mothers also recommended keeping a bottle of quick-detail spray and a microfiber cloth in your trunk. As you’ll see, a lot of these common problems can be prevented with a quick wipe of this solution.

The Source: Wildfires

The Problem: When wet, ash forms an alkali that can ruin your car’s finish.
The Solution: Keep your car covered, use a car duster for white ash, wash thoroughly if it’s soot.

These days it seems like every state is burdened with wildfires. The ash gets everywhere, and your car’s finish is no exception. While your instinct may be to hit the windshield washers, or just hose down the whole car, water mixed with ash can create powerful alkalis, which will ruin your paint. White ash can be removed with a car duster, or just by driving away and letting it blow off. Black ash can scratch your paint, even when you use a duster, so you’ll need to wash it off using a car wash solution, and dry thoroughly. Once the fires are out, get your car professionally washed, and put on a new coat of wax.

The Source: Tree sap

The Problem: Ancient peoples used tree sap as glue for a good reason.
The Solution: Bug and tar remover, mineral spirits, clay bar treatment

Just wiping sap off when it’s still gooey only smears it around a larger area. Instead, get a bottle of bug and tar remover from your local car parts store, and use it as directed. If the sap dries, mineral spirits can dissolve it, and remaining residue will come off with a clay bar treatment. Just be sure to wax the car after you’re done.

The Source: The gas pump

The Problem: Spilled gasoline
The Solution: Don’t top off, and clean up accidental drips

Times are tough, but “topping off” your gas tank and accidentally letting it overflow is a surefire way to damage your car’s paint. If left alone, gasoline will leave a stain on your car’s finish that’s nearly impossible to get off. If you do happen to spill gas by accident, the best solution is to grab a bottle of instant detailer and a good, clean microfiber cloth and clean up the gasoline before it does any harm.

The Source: Fingertips and mischief

The Problem: Writing or rubbing on dirty paint causes permanent marks.
The Solution: Keep your car clean.

We’ve all seen “wash me” written on a car’s finish, but the well-intentioned tagger actually just made things worse. Dirt acts like sandpaper when it’s dragged across paint, and it can make the marks last long after the dirt is gone.

Get yourself a long-handled duster and wipe down your car every day to prevent accidental sanding. If it’s too late, most small scratches come out with a polish or scratch remover. Just always be sure to clean the car well before waxing or polishing.

The Source: Your morning coffee

The Problem: Coffee and sodas contain acids that can etch your clearcoat.
The Solution: Wash it off immediately

Driving off with your coffee cup or soda bottle on your roof isn’t just a day-ruiner, it can ruin your paint. Many beverages are acidic, and since any acid can hurt your car’s finish, you’ll want to get it washed off as soon as you can. Letting it sit will only give it more time to do damage, and letting it dry will only make it harder to get off later. If it’s a soda, or if you take a lot of sugar in your coffee, then you’re going to be dealing with a sticky residue in addition to corrosive chemicals. If you can’t hit a car wash, then break out your bottle of quick detailer and your microfiber cloth and wipe it up.

The Source: Dirt on your car-wash tools

The Problem: Unseen dirt can scratch
The Solution: Keep an extra mitt handy.

Washing your own car can be fun, but a common mistake can cause more damage than you think: dropping your sponge. Even the finest, most expensive microfiber wash mitt on the market can be ruined if it touches the ground. The bits of grit and sand it inevitably picks up can’t be entirely washed off, and you’ll have swirl marks and other scratches before you know it. The solution is to never drop anything. But if you’re like us, it’d be best to keep a spare washing mitt or two on hand to avoid the resulting expenses from car detailing or repainting.

The Source: Automatic sprinklers

The Problem: Water leaves hard-to-remove spots on your paint.
The Solution: Stay away from sprinklers whenever possible

That primo parking spot right next to the planter may look good, but if it has automatic sprinklers, you could be in for trouble. You wouldn’t think that plain water would be such a problem, but the minerals left behind bond to your car’s paint, making them very difficult to remove. Your best bet is to avoid parking where sprinklers can do their damage, but that’s not always possible. If you do get water spots, it’s best to take it to a professional detailer.

The Source: Avian digestion

The Problem: Bird poop is acidic
The Solution: Wash it off immediately

Bird poop isn’t just unsightly. It’s also acidic. Just look at the number of ruined marble statues in pigeon-infested cities and you’ll see what we mean. Not only that, but birds eat seeds and bits of gravel that can scratch your paint.

The solution is to wash bird droppings off as soon as you see them. Use a bottle of quick detail and a soft microfiber cloth to wipe it up. Be sure to use a lifting action, since you don’t want to grind any grit onto your paint.

The Source: Bugs

9999999999999999999

The Problem: Bug guts are acidic.
The Solution: Get to the car wash

You’re heading home from a road trip when suddenly the eighth plague of Egypt strikes, with thousands of bugs splattering your windshield. But just cleaning the windshield isn’t enough. Bugs are surprisingly acidic, and if you do hit a swarm, don’t let the bugs get the last laugh as their remains slowly etch your paint. Wash your car as soon as you can with a good car wash solution, and for the more stubborn guts, use a bug and tar remover.

GMC’s Core Vehicles Lead October Sales Gains

Gmc
DETROIT – GMC, on track for its best retail and total sales year since 2007, recorded the best October sales since that year. October’s 8 percent year-over-year retail sales increase and 6 percent total sales gain were led by the brand’s three most popular vehicles – the Sierra full-size pickup, the Acadia midsize crossover SUV, and the Terrain small SUV.

With retail sales up 14 percent, Terrain experienced its best October sales to date and remains on track for its best annual sales since being introduced as a 2010 model. Updates for the 2013 model year include a new 301-horsepower V-6.

Like Terrain, Acadia remains on track for its best sales year ever. October retail sales, the highest since the same period in 2007, were up 18 percent.

“GMC’s crossover lineup has never been stronger,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of GMC Sales and Service. “Both Terrain and Acadia showcase the advanced technology and refinement our customers want as well as the bold designs and versatility they expect.”

Sierra – GMC’s best-selling vehicle – ended October with retail sales up 9 percent year over year and is on track for its best sales year since 2008. October full-size pickup sales were the best for the month since 2007.

Design Tricks Make 2013 Enclave a Halloween Family Treat

DETROIT – With an estimated 41 million trick-or-treaters on the candy trail this Halloween, some of them will be driven to the neighborhoods with the best treats in the new 2013 Buick Enclave luxury crossover SUV. And they’ll find a number of features that make it an ideal family vehicle on October 31 and the 364 less-spooky days of the year.

The U.S. Census Bureau says 115 million housing units could be potential stops for costumed ghouls, princesses and superheroes. US News and World Report named the Buick Enclave 2012’s “Best Three Row SUV for Families,” ranking it first out of 22 vehicles in the segment, based on factors including performance, interior, exterior, safety and reliability.

Enclave is the only vehicle in its segment to offer third-row seating for three, and it’s more spacious as well – good for the candy-collecting plastic pumpkins and pillow cases. Enclave’s 33.2 inches of third-row legroom is 2.4 inches more than an Infiniti JX and 4.0 inches more than an Audi Q7.

“Aiming to achieve the best ease-of-access resulted in an Enclave with choices   second row captain’s chairs or a bench seat with SmartSlide, a system that slides the second-row forward with the pull of a single handle to open up a wide path to Enclave’s third row,” said chief engineer Sue Eckel. “On Halloween, costumed kids in an Enclave can make record time jumping from that back row to the doorbell.”

Behind the third row, 23.3 cubic feet of cargo space is enough to haul approximately 26,841 snack size boxes of Milk Duds, or some spare costumes and the family dog. And you can leave your kids wondering if the standard power liftgate is controlled by ghosts.

Safety is paramount on a night busy with pedestrian traffic. According to AAA Insurance, three measures can help ensure a safe Halloween drive:

  • Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. When providing directions to a party, avoid routing guests through neighborhoods unless necessary.
  • Watch for children in the street.  Excited trick-or-treaters, often in dark costumes, may not pay attention to traffic and cross mid-block, walk in the street, on medians or between parked cars.
  • Slow down. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph.

The 2013 Enclave has a strong list of vehicle safety features, including a standard Rear Vision Camera that provides visual and audible warnings when an object or person is near the rear bumper. A Rear Cross-Traffic Alert system uses radar sensors to alert the driver of approaching traffic from either side while the vehicle is in reverse.

Enclave comes standard with high-intensity discharge headlamps, which provide crisp, clear lighting of the road ahead. Articulating headlights, which rotate up to 15 degrees to follow the road ahead, are an option.

Every Enclave is also equipped with OnStar, which leverages the technology to connect to your car from anywhere. Through the RemoteLink smartphone app, owners can map a trick-or-treating route and send it to the vehicle remotely for easy turn-by-turn directions.

Buick attracting younger buyers: GM executive

Buick, which said last month it will introduce four new or refreshed models in the U.S. market in the next 12 months, has seen the average age of its buyers drop to 57 from 64 five years ago, said Tony DiSalle, Buick marketing vice president.

"There's a lot of really strong momentum," he told reporters at an event outside Detroit. "People are seeing the product portfolio. It's changing their perception of what Buick is in a very good way."

Buick's U.S. sales rose 8 percent in September, but are down 2 percent in the first nine months on cutbacks on fleet sales to commercial customers.

The brand, which sells the Verano compact, and LaCrosse and Regal mid-sized cars and Enclave crossover, will add the Encore small crossover late in the first quarter of next year. Newer versions of the LaCrosse, Regal and Enclave are also coming.

Research firm LMC Automotive expects Buick's U.S. sales to rise almost 4 percent this year to about 184,500 vehicles and hit more than 263,000 in 2015.

Buick sales in China, which accounted for about 77 percent of the brand's global total last year, are expected to increase 4 percent to about 672,600 this year and reach almost 835,000 in 2015, LMC said.

While DiSalle did not disclose a future target for the average buyer's age, he said it would likely come down further once the Encore hits the U.S. market.

Buick's conquest rate, or the percentage of buyers who are new to GM cars, stands at 43 percent for the year to date and has been even higher in the last few months, above 45 percent, as the supply of the newer Verano increases.

The lease penetration rate has risen, hitting 36 to 37 percent, up from 15 percent at the start of the year, DiSalle said. The brand's "Experience Buick" 24-month lease program, launched in March deserves the credit, he said.

Under the program, customers receive free maintenance, as well as satellite radio and GM's OnStar communications, in-vehicle safety system.

DiSalle declined to say when the lease program would end, but added there are no current plans to discontinue it. "We have every intent to keep it going," he said. (Reporting By Ben Klayman in Birmingham, Michigan; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)

Buick and GMC Future Products through 2015: What to Expect

In the next 12 months, GM says we’ll see four new trucks for GMC—and presumably Chevy, too—and two new sedans for Buick. Later, GMC will get a new Canyon mid-size pickup truck, based on the all-new Chevy Colorado. Here’s what you can expect of the new models.

Buick LaCrosse

For the 2014 model year, the LaCrosse will get a major reskin and updated technology, including the latest touch-screen iteration of the Intellilink infotainment setup. It’ll be mechanically similar to the new Cadillac XTS and introduced-but-not-on-sale-yet Chevy Impala, offering a hybrid four and a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 and either front- or all-wheel drive. Once fairly suave, the current LaCrosse’s interior hasn’t aged well; for 2014 it’ll be all new, and judging from the XTS and Impala, modern and high-quality.

Buick Regal

Unlike the LaCrosse, which will be heavily reworked, the Regal just gets a face lift next year. Figure on some shuffling of the powertrain lineup, which is now out of sync with the rest of GM’s fleet. The Regal eAssist with a 2.4-liter four and small hybrid system probably will remain the base car, but don’t be shocked if a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four shows up beneath it.

The real changes could happen in turbo territory. Where the current Regal Turbo is rated at 220 hp, a newer version of that car’s engine—different turbocharger, altered intake and exhaust—delivers 259 ponies in the Malibu Turbo and 250 in the Verano Turbo. Sure, Buick has a 270-hp Regal GS, but why set up the middle child of this premium brand get trounced at stoplights by Mom’s Chevy?

If the Regal Turbo does hop to 250-ish hp, the GS still could carry over its powerplant. The horsepower advantage would be small, but beyond that the Regal GS is supposed to be a full-on performance car, with a sportier suspension and extroverted styling compared to the Regal Turbo. In fantasyland, the 2014 Regal GS would get all-wheel drive and a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 currently slated for an uplevel version of the Cadillac XTS and—in a different state of tune—the forthcoming ATS-V.

GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Canyon

GMC still is the money factory for GM, selling similar cars to Chevy at higher—or in the case of Denali models, much higher—prices. But the new Sierra and Yukon won’t just be pricier clones of their bow-tied brethren.

Last January, GM’s North America president Mark Reuss promised that the next big trucks and SUVs will be more cosmetically distinct from each other. The Yukon may have some significant interior upgrades, not just in aesthetic and materials but in functionality, too, Reuss told us, which we’ve read to mean better packaging for folding seats and improved passenger space.

GM also quietly, suddenly confirmed that, yes, GMC will get a new Canyon mid-size pickup spun off of the all-new global Chevy Colorado that’s also coming to the U.S. Both mid-size trucks will target both fuel-conscious truck buyers and also the Toyota Tacoma’s substantial audience for lifestyle sport trucks. Figure on V-6 engines for the Canyon and Colorado, but there’s a strong chance that the Opel diesel four being prepped for our Cruze also could be slotted into the trucks.

The mid-size-truck news is significant unto itself but also for the rest of the brand’s lineup. Mr. Reuss has said it’s far easier to design a mid-size truck to be efficient from the start than to try to “lightweight” a Silverado or Sierra. GM doesn’t want to risk durability for its big trucks by bringing in expensive, lightweight materials or using lighter components. Instead, the General will look to boost fuel economy via improved aerodynamics and the adoption of electric steering, as well as direct injection and the expansion of cylinder-deactivation tech across the latest-generation V-6 and V-8 engines.

Naturally, every new GMC will be available in fully loaded Denali trim, from the Sierra HD to the 4×8-sheet-of-plywood-hauling Yukon XL.

GMC Sierra 1500 is good-looking and comfortable

The competition between automakers has its battlegrounds, but none is more fiercely fought over than the pick-up truck segment. The reason is quite simple; more trucks are sold every year in North America than any vehicle, and that means market share. If you own a GMC truck you are more likely to consider a GM car for your second vehicle thanks to brand loyalty.

Pick-up trucks came from a purely utilitarian need for a commercial vehicle, but in the 1950s certain models were gussied up for the average consumer who enjoyed having the cargo capacity but wanted something more refined. And so began the escalating war of features and options between the Big Three automakers.

All pick-ups, domestic or foreign-made, are front-engined, RWD, 4WD or AWD, cab in the middle with a cargo box in the back. The areas that are open for innovation are the powertrain and the cab, be it two-door or four.

Design:

The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 is the most popular offering from General Motors and is up against the F-150 of Ford and the Dodge RAM 1500. The exterior styling has been freshened up with a chrome mesh grille and bumper while our SLT model had a colour-matched grille and bumper which in Onyx Black looked very slick.

A pair of six-inch chromed oval tubular “assist steps” or running boards add some flash below the rocker panels and give you a leg up when getting in and out of the truck. The Z71 4X4 Package adds some decals to the flanks of the cargo box along with a higher ride height.

The squared-off styling makes for a tough-looking vehicle and follows today’s trends quite nicely. Large double-stacked headlights and a large pair of fog lights dominate the squared-off front fascia.

Inside the crew cab there is a continuation of the black on black theme with some dark grey to break up the monotony.

The front bucket seats have leather inserts, and feature power 10-way driver and front-passenger seat adjusters (including power two-way lumbar adjuster), heated seat cushions and seatbacks, two-position driver memory, a cavernous centre floor console and seatback storage pockets for maps, etc. The rear seats are stadium-style fold-up seats on both the Extended and Crew Cab models with a 60/40 split.

For entertainment there is a Bose Premium sound system with subwoofer (in the centre console), auto tone control, speed-compensated volume, TheftLock and USB port.

Performance:

The Sierra 1500 SLT had been graced with the 5.3L Vortec V8 motor upgrade, which is a flexfuel engine meaning it can burn unleaded gasoline or up to 85 per cent ethanol thanks to with Active Fuel Management. Variable Valve Timing helps this engine generate 315 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque. Power is distributed through a six-speed transmission with overdrive to a transfer case that can drive either the rear wheels or all of them at the simple turn of a knob.

This is all part of the All Terrain Package – includes "All Terrain" badging on front fenders and carpeted floor mats, brushed metal accents on instrument panel 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, P265/65R18 On/Off road tires and Z71 Off-Road suspension. The Z71 Off-Road Chassis Package adds 46 mm monotube Rancho shock absorbers, off-road jounce bumpers and heavy-duty front stabilizer bar, also includes high-capacity air cleaner, skid plates, an industry-exclusive Eaton automatic locking rear differential, and the Z71 decals.

Driving/utility:

The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 is a well-designed truck that combines utility with comfort. Even with the more aggressive All-Terrain Package, F85 and ZR71 suspension upgrades, the Sierra’s ride was never annoyingly rigid, a pitfall with unloaded trucks. I took the Sierra on an extended trip from Montreal to New Jersey with a few hundred pounds of cargo and it rode like a car.

Pick-up trucks do require prudence when driving on winding roads. They are heavy and have a higher centre of gravity than a car, but you don’t get this cargo capacity in a smaller vehicle. GMC provides their StabiliTrak electronic stability control system to automatically help control lateral skids and have proven to reduce some types of crashes by up to 63 per cent. StabiliTrak now includes electronic trailer sway control.

The 5.3L Vortec V8 had plenty of power for passing and climbing through the mountains while returning decent fuel mileage. Once again, this is a big boxy truck, not a sleek sports car.

Access to the cargo box was more awkward than its two main rivals, which have clever retractable steps that make loading and securing your cargo easier.

The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT is certainly a contender for the domestic pick-up truck marketplace. It can be well optioned to suit your needs and deliver both your passengers and cargo with style.

Industry-First Lighting Tech Benefits 2013 Enclave

DETROIT – The Enclave luxury crossover SUV was a harbinger of a new era of design for Buick when it arrived in 2007. By the end of this year, owners of the new 2013 Enclave will experience the next generation Enclave with advanced exterior lighting, including an industry-first taillight technology.

Working with supplier 3M, Buick developed a unique LED taillight design with a soft, uniform red glow in a complex and unique shape. Like Enclave’s standard LED daytime running lamps and accent lighting, this contemporary lighting effect previews a future design element for other models the Buick lineup.

“As a brand driven by intelligent design and technology, Buick has to be at the forefront of purposeful, modern design cues,” said Mark Adams, executive director of Buick Design. “Our signature LED lighting serves a double purpose of providing a premium look and making sure our vehicles are unmistakable in the eyes and mirrors of other drivers on the road. Some of the new Enclave’s design cues will carry over to other Buick models to come, but every execution will be true to each model’s character.”

Enclave’s taillight glow is made possible by 3M Uniform Lighting Lens technology, which uses a precision engineered micro-patterned, thermoformable polycarbonate material that provides even illumination around complex shapes with fewer LEDs, reducing both complexity and energy use.

For 2013, Enclave comes standard with signature L-shaped LED daytime running lamps and high-intensity discharge headlamps, which provide a light clearer and brighter than halogen. Articulating headlamps, which use small motors to rotate the light up to 15 degrees with the curve of the road, are an option.

The 2013 Enclave’s advanced lighting story continues inside, with a cabin bathed in the Ice Blue glow of ambient lighting.

DIY car maintenance moves for fall: Check and top off fluids

Fluids

"Many electrical issues and ignition problems stem from loose or corroded battery connections," says Travers. "If you notice corrosion on the posts or cable connectors, use an appropriate brush ($4 per brush.) This is a very inexpensive, yet handy tool that you can get at any auto parts store. And clean both (posts) completely, and then reconnect everything snuggly and securely."

As part of regular car maintenance, and for safety, make sure all of the car's lights are working; it's important for you to see, as well as be seen, during autumn's longer and darker nights, adds Molla. "Replacement bulbs will typically cost a dollar or two, with the exception of headlight bulbs, of course. They're considerably more expensive, but you can replace them all quite easily on your own without tools and save yourself a hefty labor charge in the process."

Headlight bulbs range in price from $14 to $27 for a single bulb to $25 to $50 for a dual pack.

Fuel-Efficient Models Drive Buick Growth on West Coast

Buick
DETROIT – Buick retail sales rose 10 percent year over year in September and are on track for the brand’s best sales year since 2006, due in part to growth in markets like California. Total sales for Buick in September were up 8 percent year over year.

Year-over-year Buick sales have increased every month since February in California and were up 39 percent in September. Cities like San Francisco and San Diego lead the growth with September increases of 58 and 100 percent, respectively. Buick is attracting customers with eAssist technology, which delivers an EPA-estimated 36 highway mpg for the Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan and Regal luxury sport sedan.

The Verano compact luxury sedan, which offers Buick’s signature design and quietness in a smaller size, is also appealing to California buyers. Verano and Buick models with eAssist combined for 43 percent of September Buick sales in Los Angeles and 41 percent in San Diego.

“By adding purposeful technology like eAssist and entering new segments with models like Verano, Buick is appealing to a wider range of luxury buyers,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of Buick Sales and Service. “Our consistent growth in competitive markets like California is a testament to design and engineering that goes into every vehicle.”

By the end of 2012, Verano will be available in dealerships with a new 2.0L turbocharged engine producing 250 horsepower, enough to deliver an estimated acceleration from 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds while still getting an EPA-estimated 31 mpg on the highway. Verano Turbo will have a suggested retail price of $29,990, including destination.

Experience Buick has also contributed to Buick’s growth by expanding leases from 15 percent of the brand’s new vehicle deliveries when it launched in mid-March to 36 percent in September. Experience Buick is a 24-month lease that includes SiriusXM satellite radio, OnStar Directions and Connections and oil changes in the monthly payments.

Buick Achievers Awards 1,100 Scholarships Nationwide

NEW YORK – The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, funded by the General Motors Foundation, today announced scholarships totaling approximately $4.2 million to 1,100 recipients during the NBC News Education Nation Summit in New York City.

The students, who come from all 50 states, were honored for excelling in the classroom and the community. They will receive financial resources to pursue a college degree within the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), or other related fields of study.

As one of the largest in the country, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is noteworthy because it grants 100 students up to $25,000. The grants are renewable for up to four years and one additional year for qualified five-year engineering programs.

Additionally, 1,000 students receive a one-time $2,000 award.  By the end of 2012, the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program expects to have provided nearly $13 million to help students attend school. Eligibility was expanded this year from first-time college-bound students to include current undergraduates.

The GM Foundation hosted five of the 2012 national recipients at Education Nation, where they participated in the first-annual nationally televised Student Town Hall moderated by MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry. The students, Saad Amer; Medford, N.Y. (Harvard University); Denney Choi; Gardena, Calif. (University of California – Berkeley); Carmen Gil; Miami, Fla. (University of Florida – Gainesville); Thomas Jones; Orange, Tex. (Freed-Hardeman University) and Melissa Rey; Chesterfield, Mo. (Pomona College/Caltech), joined in conversations about today’s educational system, sharing ideas and concerns about the rising cost of a college education.

“Students are graduating today with more than $25,000 in debt, hindering them with years of financial burden,” said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard. “Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, the GM Foundation is able to alleviate some of those financial hurdles, while fostering the growth of the next generation of leaders for STEM-related fields.”

The program comes at a time when there are less than 1,500 math and science graduates for every 100,000 employed 25- to 34-year-olds in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.  In fact, the United States ranks 27th among developed nations where college students receive undergraduate degrees in science.

This year’s recipients represent every state in the nation. Additionally, 527 of the students are the first in their family to attend college while 73 recipients come from military families.

For more information about the Buick Achiever Scholarship Program, to view the complete list of 2012 recipients, or to register for an e-mail notification when the next application window opens, please visit www.buickachievers.com.

Nine New Models in Next 12 Months for Buick and GMC

DETROIT – Buick and GMC told dealers today that it will introduce nine new or significantly updated models in the next 12 months, starting with the new Buick Enclave luxury crossover SUV and GMC Acadia crossover SUV this fall.

The new Buick Encore small luxury crossover, which will be priced at $24,950 including a $750 destination charge, arrives in early 2013. A Buick Regal luxury sport sedan, Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan, GMC Sierra and Sierra HD full-size pickups, as well as GMC Yukon and Yukon XL full-size SUVs will arrive next year.

In addition to these nine models, GMC will offer luxury-appointed Denali versions of its four upcoming vehicles and a new 2.0L turbocharged powertrain will be available in the Buick Verano this year.

By the end of 2013, the oldest non-commercial models in a Buick/GMC showroom will be the Buick Verano luxury sedan and GMC Terrain small SUV. Verano has been in dealer showrooms for less than a year and has gained sales volume every month since launch. Terrain arrived as a 2010 model and is on pace for its best sales year ever in 2012. A new Denali luxury trim level recently was added.

GMC also announced the return of the GMC Canyon midsize pickup as an all-new model to be built in Wentzville, Mo. Arrival timing will be announced later.

“While we continue to make strong progress in fuel economy gains on our full-size trucks, we know that there is a group of customers who want the functionality of a truck but may not need full-size pickup,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick and GMC Marketing. “We believe that introducing a new, agile and efficient mid-size Canyon will meet the needs of many pickup buyers.”

Buick and GMC have grown together as distinctly different but complementary brands. Together, they have sold more than 400,000 vehicles so far this year, a pace that should allow each brand to achieve a third consecutive year of sales gains.

“We’re not only selling more vehicles, we’re bringing new customers to the Buick and GMC showroom,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of Buick and GMC Sales and Service. “Both brands report more than 40 percent conquest sales. Buick was the only automotive brand in the United States to reduce the average age of its buyer during the past five years, and GMC continues to attract more female buyers and – with Denali vehicles – more import and luxury owners.

Overall, General Motors will have 70 percent all-new or significantly refreshed products across its four U.S. brands in 2012-2013.

2013 GMC Acadia Denali impresses On and Off the Beaten Path

The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali feels just as at home on the off-road Rocky Mountain trail as it does on Rodeo Drive.  The Rocky Mountain Automotive Press association has just completed its inaugural 2012 4xFall Off-Road Experience and the 2013 GMC Acadia Denali was one of the participating vehicles.  This event is meant to give automotive journalists a chance to sample a selection of AWD crossovers, SUVs, and 4WD vehicles in the challenging but beautiful high altitude environment of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

I spent limited time behind the wheel of the2013 GMC Acadia Denali and in the passenger seat, both on and off pavement; it was immediately clear that this luxurious cruiser is not afraid to get down and dirty.  I was lucky enough to direct the Acadia Denali on an intermediate off-road trail near Caribou, CO, followed by a drive down a graded dirt and gravel road, as well as navigating around the small town of Nederland.  We were not using this car to crawl over large boulders, but it handled the rock littered and sometimes muddy trail without a problem.  This was even more impressive, considering that this Denali was wearing 20 inch aluminum wheels and street tires.

The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali gets its name from a rugged and wild region in the heart of Alaska, so it seems fitting to test a vehicle with the Denali badge in this off-road environment.  However, the capable AWD system and the adequate ground clearance are not the only bold attributes of this 2013 model.  The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali receives a mid-cycle refresh that brings with it a more aggressive and serious front end design.  2013 GMC Acadia Denali The headlights get the very distinctive LED daytime running lights and there was no end to the compliments and comments that these LEDs received during our test.  There are also the more pronounced fender flares and the all LED tail lamps.  The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali also boasts the industry first front center air bag to prevent the driver and the front passenger from hitting each other in the event of an accident.

Our tester was a fully loaded model that included dual sunroofs, rear video entertainment system, GMC IntelliLink media and navigation system, cooled and heated front seats, and other luxury goodies.  The sticker price for all this goodness stood at $51,840.  We will have a more thorough review of the 2013 Acadia Denali when we get a chance to spend more time with it.

DIY Car Maintenance Moves for Fall: Check Your Spare Tire

Tire
"Autumn is also a good time to check your spare tire to ensure that it is properly inflated," says Jim Travers, associate editor for autos at Consumer Reports and familiar with car maintenance. The typical space-saver spare tire found in most cars must be inflated to the inflation pressure listed on the side of the tire. A tire pressure gauge costs $7 to $20.

"Spare tires on pickup trucks and sport utilities are suspended underneath the vehicle on a cable, and that mechanism requires regular attention," says Pat Goss, master technician of PBS's "MotorWeek." Lower and raise that under-car spare to check if the cable mechanism works freely. In fall, spray it with a rust penetrant like WD-40 and then lube with white lithium grease. If the mechanism has seized, repair it immediately.

Tire pressure drops one PSI, or pound per square inch, for every 10-degree drop in temperature, according to the AAA, so check your tires on a weekly basis. The proper inflation pressure will generally be listed in your vehicle's owner manual and/or noted on a sticker located on the driver's doorjamb.

2013 GMC Acadia Priced at $34,875

DETROIT – The 2013 GMC Acadia three-row crossover SUV launches this fall with a suggested retail price of $34,875, including a destination charge of $825. The upscale Denali trim – originally added to Acadia for the 2011 model year – will return with a long list of standard equipment for $46,770, including destination.

In addition to new styling and upgraded interior materials, every 2013 Acadia will include new standard features such as Rear Park Assist, a rearview camera, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, a Color Touch Radio with HD radio, USB port, signature LED daytime running lights, and interior ambient lighting.

Most Acadia trim levels will come standard with IntelliLink connectivity and the industry’s first front-center air bag, which is designed to protect drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes. Acadia Denali’s standard equipment includes a power tilt and telescoping steering column, Head-Up Display, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

“The 2013 Acadia arrives with great momentum,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing. “Our design and engineering updates add even more value to an award-winning vehicle that just saw its best August ever, with retail sales up 35 percent.”

Acadia is a segment leader in retained value, defined as the projected residual value of a vehicle after five years of ownership. Both Edmunds.com and ALG have named the 2012 Acadia to their respective lists of the industry’s residual value leaders.

GMC Kicks Off NFL Season with Times Square Takeover

DETROIT – The 2012 NFL regular season arrives this week and GMC will be at the ready as the “Official Vehicle of the NFL.” At the NFL Kick-off event in New York City today, the brand arrived in Times Square with a fleet of 33 GMC Sierra fullsize pickups, each featuring logos of the NFL and its 32 teams.

How much capability does that many Sierras represent? Using a Sierra 1500 extended cab with the popular 5.3L V-8 and a standard bed length as an example, 33 trucks equals:

  • 62,964 pounds of payload, the weight of 67,162 footballs weighing 15 ounces each, as required by the NFL rulebook.
  • 320,100 pounds of towing capacity, the weight of 1,067 NFL linemen at 300 pounds each.

Throughout the 2012 NFL season, GMC’s “Never Say Never” campaign will include weekly contests allowing fans to vote on their favorite plays, interact with football stars on social media, and have opportunities to win a GMC vehicle of their choice, or tickets to Monday Night Football games or even the big game in February. The NFL has an estimated fan base of more than 181 million.

Football fans can learn more and get involved at www.nfl.com/gmc.>

“GMC and the NFL share an image founded on toughness and durability,” said Craig Bierley, GMC advertising and promotions director. “Just as the football season ahead will showcase players stretching the limits of athletic ability, GMC vehicles are engineered for performance and longevity.”

In addition to being the “Official Vehicle of the NFL,” GMC is the official vehicle of ESPN’s Monday Night Football, the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.

Terrain Guides Volunteer Disaster Assessor Across Rockies

DETROIT – In the aftermath of July wildfires that burned 97,000 acres in the Western United States, disaster relief volunteer Dave Fagan traversed 3,500 miles of bulldozed fire lines and mountain trails across Colorado and Wyoming in a GMC Terrain. He experienced first-hand the small SUV’s capability.

“The Terrain really performed,” said Fagan. “When other vehicles seemed to have lost traction, the Terrain didn’t, and it had great maneuverability compared to what I saw from the vehicles I drove alongside. Plus, I was impressed by the fuel economy out there where there aren’t many gas stations.”

The Terrain 4-cylinder gets an EPA-estimated 22 city and 32 highway mpg. All-wheel drive models get an estimated 20 city and 29 highway mpg.

Fagan was also pleasantly surprised by some of Terrain’s features, including a standard Rear Vision Camera.

“On some narrow trails, there was only one way in and out. With tight space to turn around, the camera was very helpful. The Terrain also handled my many chargers, which made it a great mobile office.”

“I found it outstanding,” Fagan said of the Terrain provided by his organization. “It may be my next vehicle.”

He won’t be alone. The Terrain is on track for its best sales year ever in 2012. Year to date through August, sales are up more than 10 percent versus the same period a year ago.

Terrain was developed to deliver great on-road performance without sacrificing versatility, For the 2013 model year, the Terrain adds an optional new 301-horsepower, 3.6L V-6 engine for added performance to go along with its all-wheel drive and a 3,500-pound tow rating.

“Terrain’s smaller footprint that helps save weight and fuel also makes it more maneuverable on tight trails where adventurous customers might take their vehicles,” said GMC lead development engineer Essy Ipakchian. “We also developed Terrain’s standard StabiliTrak and optional all-wheel drive with different road conditions – rain, snow, rocks and mud – in mind.”

Every Terrain is equipped with technology designed for the steep grades Fagan encountered across the Rockies. Hill Start Assist holds brake pressure for 1.5 seconds to allow drivers time to press the accelerator without rolling back, while Automatic Grade Braking manages the transmission gear selection on declines, holding a lower gear to preserve the vehicle’s brakes.
