Summer Car Care for your Bob Brown Buick or GMC!

Avoid Sun Damage: If you can, garage your car or cover it to avoid too much damage from the sun, which can fade paint (along with interior materials) over time. The sun doesn't just age humans, it affects cars, too.

Switch Oil Weight (if applicable): This is more important on older cars, since newer cars are more likely to run synthetic blends or oil weights that are suited for year-round use. On many older vehicles, it's best to use a thinner oil in the winter (so the oil can flow more easily) and a thicker one that protects engine components better when it's hot out and oil flows more easily. The best way to take care of this is to simply change oil weights when performing your spring and fall oil changes.

Buick Verano Turbo Officially Rated At 20 MPG City, 31 Highway

When we first drove the 2012 Buick Verano in Oregon, and again in Michigan, it was quick to conclude that one of the vehicle’s lowlights is its basic 2.4L Ecotec engine producing 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. It’s not that it doesn’t provide performance — ther Verano isn’t trying to be a sports car — but it felt a tad unrefined, and returned fuel economy numbers of 21 mpg city and 32 highway. These figures seem mediocre at best for a modern front-wheel-drive compact, though still better than the Acura TSX and ILX. But as we know, the Verano will offer a 250 horsepower turbocharged 2.0L mill and a manual transmission for the 2013 model year come the fall season.

This is where things get interesting, as the power jumps 70 horses, and 89 pound-feet while only sacrificing one mile per gallon both on the city and the highway. Officially rated by the EPA, the numbers come in at 20 mpg city and 31 mpg highway while also out-muscling the alike four cylinder, front-wheel-drive Acura TSX and ILX compact sedans.

Pricing still hasn’t been announced for the Verano’s boosted four-banger, but for our current vantage point, it seems that the minimal fuel economy trade-off will make the upgrade worth-it.

Buick goes about and beyond to enhance your safety with 10 air bags advanced active safety in the 2013 Verano and Encore.

DETROIT – In addition to the redesigned Enclave luxury crossover SUV arriving this fall, Buick’s lineup will continue to expand in the coming year with two all-new models – the 250-horsepower  (187 kW) Verano Turbo luxury sedan and the versatile Encore luxury crossover. No matter the size, safety is a cornerstone of every new Buick.

Both Verano and Encore offer 10 standard air bags and body structures that consist of more than 60 percent high-strength steel. In the 2013 model year, each model also receives new active safety systems. Unlike passive safety features – such as safety belts and air bags – that are designed to protect occupants when a crash occurs, active safety systems use sounds, visual warnings and automated actions to help prevent crashes.

Later this summer, Verano will make standard a Rear Vision Camera on all models and an optional safety package that includes Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These two technologies share a set of radar sensors hidden in the corners of the rear bumper that may help drivers avoid crashes when changing lanes or backing.

When backing, Rear Cross Traffic Alert senses cross traffic up to 65 feet away that may not be visible to the driver when backing out of a parking space or driveway. The driver is alerted with a red directional arrow displayed on the Rear Vision Camera screen and three directional beeps.

“We want to integrate our backing visual warnings onto that screen so drivers know where to look and can quickly see for themselves what’s causing the warning,” said Raymond Kiefer, General Motors Active Safety Technical Fellow. “That way, they can react quickly to what the camera, radar and ultrasonic sensors are detecting.”

Side Blind Zone Alert technology makes its way to the Verano from the larger LaCrosse luxury sedan and Enclave luxury crossover SUV. It cautions drivers when a vehicle is in a blind zone in an adjacent lane. According to sales data, it is among Buick’s most popular active safety features.

Encore, which arrives early in 2013, carries its own active safety resume and will be the first vehicle in its segment to offer the combination of Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. Both features use a single forward-looking camera sensor that has a lower cost to consumers than competitive systems that use radar or a combination of radar and camera.

“Studies suggest that people can use changes in object size as they approach to estimate how long until they collide,” said Kiefer. “Buick’s single-camera detection system works much like a human eye, with state-of-the-art image processing equipment analyzing 10-12 scene images per second to decide if the changes in the size of a vehicle ahead suggest a crash may be just a few seconds away.”

Forward Collision Alert can be adjusted to near, medium and far timing settings.  Although an “Off” setting is also provided, the majority of owners report they keep the system active.

At speeds above 25 mph, Forward Collision Alert gives audible and visual warnings when a collision may be imminent. Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they may have crossed a detected lane marker without using a turn indicator when driving at speeds over 35 mph. It, too, can be deactivated with the push of a button.

Like every current Buick, Encore will be offered with a Rear Vision Camera.

Enclave, the industry’s top-selling three-row luxury crossover, will debut this year with safety innovations of its own, including the world’s first front center air bag. Every Buick also comes standard with six months of an OnStar Directions and Connections plan, which includes Automatic Crash Response and roadside assistance.

Every 2012 Buick model is rated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and every Buick model tested by the U.S. government’s New Car Assessment Program this year has received a Five Star Overall Vehicle Score. Terrain Sets Sales Record in First Six Months of 2012

Terrain

DETROIT – Through the first half of 2012, more new car buyers have chosen the GMC Terrain small SUV than during any previous January-to-June retail sales period, with year-to-date retail sales up 8 percent versus 2011. In the month of June, year-over-year retail sales for Terrain increased by 2 percent.

Total GMC sales were up 15 percent year-over-year in June, while retail sales—those sold to individual customers—increased by 3 percent.

Terrain’s sales success will be bolstered later this year by an all-new Denali model featuring new safety and comfort technologies, in addition to more luxurious interior appointments and upscale exterior design cues.

Top media outlets from around the country recently drove the new Terrain Denali for the first time. Motor Trend tested the Terrain against another small SUV and found that the Denali’s performance put the competition “on the trailer,” while Parents found that Terrain Denali “includes a wealth of great technology that has the consumer’s best interests in mind.”

GMC Sierra Heavy Duty fullsize pickups, including ¾-ton and 1-ton models, had their 24th month of consecutive total sales increases in June, growing 15 percent. Sierra HD retail sales grew 11 percent year-over-year.

Total sales of all Sierra models, including light-duty and heavy-duty, increased by 1 percent year-over-year. During the month of June, Sierra 1500 was ranked highest in its segment in a J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study.

Yukon and Yukon XL fullsize SUVs, which were named as segment leaders in the same J.D. Power & Associates study, saw a year-over-year retail sales increase of 10 percent in June.

Retail sales of the GMC Acadia midsize crossover SUV increased in June as well, up 11 percent.

“All of GMC’s core products gained sales in June,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of GMC Sales and Service. “In addition, our two longest-running models—Sierra and Yukon—were recognized for superior initial quality and the upcoming Terrain Denali was well received by critics. We plan to build on this momentum through the second half of 2012.”

Monday Maintenance tip: Cold Facts About A/C Refrigerant

How did we ever get along without air conditioning in our cars? It’s a feature we take for granted until, suddenly, it’s blowing hot air.

In the past few years, many owners have discovered that fixing an inoperative air conditioner can cost a few hundred dollars or more, depending upon the make and model of vehicle. The reason is that the old standby R-12 refrigerant, trade named DuPont Freon, has been replaced by R-134a. Touted as being environmentally safer than its predecessor, R-134a has been standard since ’94.

If your older vehicle needs major repairs to the air conditioning system you can expect to replace refrigerant and the oil in the compressor in addition to the old components. You also may need to install a retrofit conversion. Do not allow anyone to mix refrigerants. They’re not inter-changeable. You cannot add R-134a to your older air conditioner without first flushing the system. Further, according to the Car Care Council, some substitutes are volatile mixtures of propane, butane and flammable hydrocarbons. Keep in mind the fact that if your vehicle is leaking refrigerant, you’re damaging the ozone layer.

An annual inspection of the vehicle, including the air conditioning system, may help forestall costly repairs. Many automotive service shops offer AC inspection specials when warm weather arrives. Otherwise, ask your service center to evaluate your system before those hot and humid days of summer.
